What goes on a pay stub

  • Gross pay — hours worked times the pay rate, before anything is taken out.
  • Social Security — the employee's share is 6.2% of gross pay, matched by the employer.
  • Medicare — the employee's share is 1.45% of gross pay, also matched by the employer.
  • Federal and state withholding — income tax held back based on the employee's Form W-4 and your state's rules. The percentages here are placeholders you set yourself.
  • Net pay — what the employee actually takes home after deductions.
